LENINGRAD · 1930

The first motorcycle of a country that had none.

The order

No industry, and a deadline.

In 1930 the Soviet Union built no motorcycles of its own — no factories tooled for them, no supply chain, no riders. The decision was not to design one. It was to take a German DKW Luxus 300, work out how it was made, and make it in Leningrad.

Service life

Reconnaissance, communication, and racing.

It carried dispatch riders for the Red Army, where a machine that could be fixed by its rider mattered more than one that was fast. It also raced — road, cross-country, long-distance records — against imported machines built by factories with thirty years of practice, and kept up.
